Watch Sacha Baron Cohen Get Serious in ‘The Trial of the Chicago 7’ | Anatomy of a Scene

Aaron Sorkin knows his way around courtroom drama theatrics. His script (adapted from his Broadway play) for the 1992 Tom Cruise-Jack Nicholson verbal slugfest “A Few Good Men,” did not shy away from gavel-banging razzmatazz. He returns to court with the docudrama “The Trial of the Chicago 7” (streaming on Netflix), which he wrote and directed.

The trial of the title involves several antiwar activists (played by several Oscar and Emmy winners) who were accused of conspiring to cause riots at the 1968 Democratic National Convention.

The trial itself was a carnival of sometimes funny, sometimes shocking moments, which Sorkin depicts. But this scene, featuring the testimony of the usually more jokey agitator Abbie Hoffman (played by the usually more jokey Sacha Baron Cohen), turns down the volume and gives the court more of the order its judge (Frank Langella) has been seeking throughout the film.

It’s the film’s final trial scene, but it’s handled differently than usual. Narrating this video, Sorkin explains why he went in a quieter, more straightforward direction, and why all eyes were on Cohen in interpreting its tone in his performance.

DAYSINTHEBIGAPPLE : wawaweewa! very nice, i like
Fred Fisher : Emphasis on "watch". Better title: "watch performance but listen to another guy talk"
McBastard_Tv : Sacha Baron Cohen's American accent is absolutely terrible you couldn't get a better actor to play that part he's only good at Borat. His only job is to act and he's terrible at it.
Vindawg : Its an OK movie. The accents of the two lead British actors kept throwing me off.
Malinibai : Who else would really, really have preferred to hear Sacha than Sorkin?
Tony Subman : I think I'll watch this tonight
Aunt Sassy : His supposed-American accent sucks.
Lo Lo : Friendly reminder to water your plants today
Artes Pintura Ana Estrela : ❤

How a U.S. Task Force Killed a Wanted Antifa Activist

President Trump praised the killing of Michael Reinoehl, suspected of fatally shooting a far-right protester, as “retribution.” Our investigation found that officers may have shot without warning or seeing a gun.

Evan Hill : Hi everyone, I’m one the lead reporters on this story. I’d been tracking the Michael Reinoehl case since the killing of Patriot Prayer supporter Aaron J. Danielson in Portland on Aug. 29, which appeared to be the first time a supporter of President Trump had been killed at a protest this summer. Our investigation into that shooting ( https://www.nytimes.com/2020/08/31/video/portland-protests-shooting-investigation.html ) showed that a man who looked like Reinoehl was responsible, and Reinoehl later effectively admitted to the shooting in an interview published by Vice News. Then, five days later, federal authorities announced they’d killed Reinoehl in a raid, and Trump praised it as “retribution.” The circumstances, especially the president’s suggestion that Reinoehl was killed as payback, seemed worth looking into.

We hired Derek Knowles, a West Coast filmmaker and videographer, to visit the scene of Reinoehl’s killing in Lacey, Wash., and interview witnesses. What Knowles found was a story that contradicted the official narrative put out by the Trump administration in the immediate aftermath — that officers had attempted to “peacefully arrest” Reinoehl, who attempted to flee and “produced” a gun. Instead, 21 witnesses, including five eyewitnesses, said the officers opened fire on Reinoehl without any warning. After combing through their interviews and mapping out the raid moment by moment, we took our findings to Lieutenant Ray Brady of the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office, who commands the team investigating Reinoehl’s homicide. Lieutenant Brady told us that the officers themselves had given conflicting statements to investigators. One said he saw Reinoehl raise what looked like a weapon inside his car, but two said Reinoehl only moved toward the center console. Officers fired anyway. Then, just before the fatal burst of fire, one officer said Reinoehl pointed a gun, but others said he only reached toward his pocket.

According to Lieutenant Brady, the officers were not wearing cameras, and there’s no video of the incident. So we decided to write up our findings with our correspondent Mike Baker in an article ( https://www.nytimes.com/2020/10/13/us/michael-reinoehl-antifa-portland-shooting.html ) and to recreate the federal raid in this video. We think our investigation raises questions about whether the U.S. Marshals task force ever intended to arrest Reinoehl.
CCRob720 : i am surprise 'vice news' did not conduct this story.
Daniel Jones : "Our investigation found that officers may have shot without warning or seeing a gun."
Sooooo, exactly what happened to the guy he murdered. Sounds fair to me!
S Cramer : Antifa is a criminal group. Complete anti-America. They must be stopped
mary jones : they were judge, jury, and executioner all wrapped up in one... that is not how America behaves, that is how they do it in russia or n. korea.
JoEllen Paull : Murder! Government murder of a citizen they disagreed with. We arrest, charge and then move through the courts. We are a nation of laws. I hate Trump and everything he has done, supported, encouraged or mandated through his executive orders. Worst president ever!
Jizzle : Who cares, you reach for something and don't follow commands...all I wish you is good luck fool.
Evelio Gonzalez : We support our police officers USA USA USA be a good person or citizen, fallow the law or rules and you will leave a good life, work hard and pay your taxes, you only leave once
Bryan K : Is the “lead reporter” suggesting that when an officer believes that a suspect is prepared to shoot, said officer should perform a survey of his fellow officers before defending himself?
Army Girl : TRUMP supporters run people over, send bombs, steal votes, and hatch terroristic plots ,yet none of them are dead. Hmmm I wonder why. Meanwhile Trump keeps killing Americans

What's the Problem With Vote-by-Mail? | 2020 Elections

The second episode of our four-part series, Stressed Election, focuses on vote-by-mail, which has become one of the most contentious issues of the 2020 election. In Michigan, a state decided by fewer than 11,000 votes in 2016, a group of bipartisan election officials worry they won’t have the time or resources to ensure results on election night.

Democrat Resistance : Benson needs to stay our SOS for 10 years . She's amazing and the smartest. We need 30 days to count ballots and machines will break n burn out.
Awesome Aasim : At least voting by mail is a ton better than voting electronically. See Tom Scott and Computerphile: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LkH2r-sNjQs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w3_0x6oaDmI
Hugo Vosloo : Why don´t you guys do it electronically?! One of the (very) few things Brazil can teach you is that. In a few hours (h-o-u-r-s)after the end of the voting period you know the winner. And the thing is pretty safe to be done and no lunatic would dare to claim otherwise...
is Jailan : Remain calm everyone
Democracy for the People : Vote in person in PA if your health allows. TRUMP PLANS TO INVALIDATE MAIL-IN BALLOTS IN PA (references to reliable news sources for this explosive info at the end of video)

Fred810k : seeing people not cover their face properly makes me cringe
Dolores Leyva : It does not matter how long it takes to count or what Trump says as long as the people vote and send or drop off the ballots early and on time and the votes are counted!!
Daniel Sohn : Black people couldn't vote during the Civil War, so that stupid "Well...not everyone" graphic doesn't make any sense. But let's not let common sense stop the NYT from making some white guy making a totally innocuous and factually correct statement look like Jeb Stuart.
Captain.phoenix : 6:43 oh how times change
Thato Mogale : S*it is gonna destroy the fan in November
